Still going strong

Well, been going a couple of months now. Doing about 40 miles a week. Tracking my runs with Strava and gradually getting longer.

Nearly killed myself yesterday. Went for a ride hoping to make it past 10 miles but only did 8.2. That said, I would have been okay if I hadn't picked a seriously hilly route. Strava said elevation gained was 515 ft. Had to pull the bike over about 200 yards from the top of the last hill. Legs just couldn't go on. Had a five minute break and then finished the last half mile

Still not losing weight though. Diet improved, doing good exercise and still nothing coming off. Few people say I'm looking thinner but I just don't see it

I'm in the same boat. Doing 10,15 and one 21 mile ride, but only lost 1/2 a stone thus far. Feel stronger, clothes fit better, but the scales aren't moving quickly enough for me.
Part of me is getting impatient, but part of me says "you're building muscles"

You'll be turning fat into muscle in the early stages of getting fit again. This means you'll look better, but the weight won't change much. You need to be patient, extend the cycling time and distance gradually and after a couple of months you should really start to see the difference. Keep up the good work.

It'll come off if you stick at it!

I went from 16 1/2 stone to 12 1/2 stone within a few months of starting cycling, stopping eating crap and cutting down dramatically on beer. That was 20 years ago and my weight has been up and down a bit since then, but never higher than 14 1/2 stone (I'm 6'2" so even at the heavier end of the scale it's not too bad). I've had a few long-ish period off bikes in that 20 years and, surprise surprise, my weight increases have been during those periods!

My personal opinion is that you have to alter your diet quite dramatically as well ('though this obviously depends on what your diet was 'before'). For me this meant totally cutting out all between meals snacks and losing the chocolate bar / crisps from the lunch time pack-up and the pudding from the evening meal.

Being a tightwad at work helps keep me away from vending machines as I eat what I take to work. Plenty of fruit, fresh and dried (prunes, raisins etc) and seed mix (pumpkin, sunflower etc). Drink lots of water if you start to feel hungry.

Sounds like you need to spend more time in the saddle. Track your calories and see if you are truly in a deficit or not... If you are then you will be losing weight.

I don't subscribe to the 'building muscle' or 'turning fat into muscle' theories. Fat is fat and muscle is muscle. I doubt you will be building muscle if you're eating a caloric defict. You can probably maintain your muscle mass, at the same time as losing fat, by creating a caloric deficit and doing strength training, to stop the deminishment of lean mass (muscle).

Try to cutout junk food as much as possible. If you drink beer... stopping that or vastly reducing intake, will be a winner!

Good luck :bravo:
