Sticking drops on a MTB

My understanding is with MTB frame geometry this might give a too stretched position is that likely? Is it worth getting a frame size too small?

Where I'm coming from with this is I have a bunch of unused bike bits cluttering up the place...

Most of it is MTB specific (drivetrain, 2 26" disc wheels, some fat 26" semislicks, spare discs and a spare BB7 brake caliper, kona P2 forks, etc). However, I also have some spare drops, diacomp v-brake levers for drops, and some bar end shifters.

I figure, I just need a frame to hang it on and i could fairly cheaply turn this into a roughstuff type tourer / knockabout bike. Probably looking to get an Orange P7 or On-One Inbred frame off eBay. I don't need another bike, but it's better than it sat about doing nothing.

I'm 6"0 and IIRC my existiing MTB is a 19" frame and I use a short stem (70mm). I would therefore be looking to buy a frame a couple of inches shorter?

Don't get the on-one as their MTB sizing is very odd, very very long top tubes even for smaller frames.

Dumb down - look for a cheaper frame, lower end MTBs aimed at the more casual rider have shorter top tubes, just avoid retro MTBs as again they had long top tubes.

I am building my RTB around an old Giant Boulder in 17", it's plenty short enough to run with drops.

Alright, cheeers, you've saved me money on the on-one, I don't know much about the geometry of various MTB frames.. A Carrera Vulcan went for spare or repairs over the weekend for 35 quid, based on what you say I might have been good with that.
