Stem size help please?

I have an old road bike for winter commuting and I'm wanting to change the stem for a slightly shorter one but not sure of the standard bar diameter or stem and don't have a tape measure to hand , please could anyone tell me what the standard bar size is for this bike as I can't find it online anywhere , any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Sorry, but that is a "How long is a piece of string?" question - I have 3 bikes, each with different bar and fork steerer diameters!

An easy way to measure the diameters (if you don't have access to calipers), is to close a large adjustable spanner across the thing you want to measure, and measure the distance between the spanner's jaws.

Ha ha - 8.5 inches actual inches of my screen = 11.1 inches on the screen ruler! I think buying or borrowing an actual rule or set of callipers is the way to go ...
