I'm rescuing an early 1960s Raleigh which has steel rims. These were a solid brown when I got the bike; cleaning with oxalic acid showed some remaining chrome, but a lot had disappeared.
As a last resort I have used green pads and lots of effort and they are now coming up silver. My concern is that I have exposed the bare steel, the majority of the chrome having gone long ago.
My question to you is about protecting the steel surface. I could paint them, but is there any way to retain the bright silver finish?
Thanks in advance.
