Anyone got experiences of having stuff custom made (non bike) in steel?

I want a set of pull up/chin up bars in the garage but the rafter I want to attach to is at an angle so nothing commercially available will fit. Door mounted bars are also out due to the depth of the door frame.

I know what the design would look like; is it just a question of sketching it out and taking it somewhere to get a quote? Will they be able to advise on steel gauge/thickness etc?

Anyone got any recommendations (especially Manchester area)?

Cheers

How about someone who makes iron gates/fencing ? There is a metal worker/artisty sort of person in Marple, but I'd guess they'd be too expensive - they'd look good though.

There's a good fabricator next door to us in Glossop, I'll get his number and PM it tomorrow if you like.

I constructed a chinning bar in my garage many years ago.

I used a pair of Motorcross handlebars on a length of rope slung over the rafter.

The swinging bar taught me control. Slow smooth chins with a halt and pause between each movement is better by far than quick jerky reps on a solidly fixed bar.

Most towns have a backstreet workshop, usually on an industrial estate these days, where they make garden railings, fire escapes, that sort of thing.

Some aren't interested in small one-off jobs like yours. If so, ask them who else they'd reccomend, and keep going until you find a place that'll help.

Both for work and for me, I've had lots of jobs done by small engineering/fabrication shops.

Explain what it's for and tell 'em how much you weigh! They'll judge the required thickness from that. (Are you sure the rafters are up to the job?!)

If you have no luck, I'll do it for you if you send me accurate measurements and a sketch.

Just look for welder / fabricators in the yellow pages, and as Phil says, pick the smaller places or one man bands, not the big guys who won't want to do one-offs. Have a chat with the guy about what you want to achieve, and if you don't get useful thoughts or the conversation's ringing alarm bells, walk away.

If I was up your way I'd do it for you, sounds easy.
