Starting to need motivation

I think I'm starting to need some motivation to get out and ride. I'm used to riding alone as none of my mates are interesting in cycling or they have family commitments at weekends. I know many people would love to live at the edge of the Peak District as I do but I'm beginning to tire of riding the same roads over and over again. I'm considering joining the cycling club in Bolsover after an aborted attempt earlier in the year just for some new routes to ride and some company every now and then. I did a sportive for the first time earlier in July and it was great to ride a few different roads.

Someone give me a kick up the backside please!

Join a club. Only thing that keeps me going. I hate riding by myself all the time. My work involves me working alone a lot, so that bit of social interaction doing something I love really helps.

If you've got the peak district on one side of you, what's the other side? Can you explore that bit of countryside?

Motivation- If you don't get out and ride, we'll come up and pinch your bike (or pop your tyres).....!

You need to not think about it, just do it.

I have this idea that for most of us our brain tries to prevent us exercising, with 101 different excuses;- too tired, can't be bothered, not motivated, its wet, sore legs, I'll go tomorrow.

As someone on a forum said when I was starting, the most important step you take in exercising is from your bed to the front door.

Mix it up - hard rides, recovery rides, long rides, quick rides when you have a spare hour, rides with others, rides on your own, but most of all just do it.

A routine helps, every Saturday morning, plus two evenings a week for instance then you just need to go home change and go rather than question it at all.

Jump on a train, or drive to somewhere that gives you a whole new set of roads to go at.

I think my ability to motivate you rather depends on what bike you've got.

If it's a decent road bike about the right size for a 5' 11" bloke and is free on collection, then sack it, cycling's just not for you.

Failing that, think about festering in font of the TV picking cream cracker crumbs out of your spare tyre, while your mind wanders to the sense of achievement you got from making that climb, the peace of that sunset and the freedom of that quiet road.

Now, when can I collect my new bike?
