Hi,i am sure i must be just a little bit crazy,i used to be a competition & leisure cyclist when i was in my teens & 20's and i kept reasonably fit after that by playing rugby & commuting by bike into my mid 40's.
In later years unfortunatly my health suffered a bit & i took to swimming,i had a op' to form a ileostomy, followed by a quad by-pass 5 years ago & arthritis.(i said i was crazy) however the bug still bites & i would like to start riding again with a view to training for some charity ride rides & who knows,i have spoken to my doctor about my idea who advised don;t go mad,has anybody got any advice on training, mileages etc & what i should look at realistically i would appreciate it,i have recently bought a claud butler urban 100 which i would be riding.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I have had 5 angioplasties, the most recent 3 in 2006. I found completeing the Cardio Rehabilitation scheme at my local hospital, and sports centre, followed by Exercise on Prescription at my local gym, was extremely helpful, and haven't looked back. I am now cycling regularly with the local club, averaging around 100 miles a week at this time of year - short rides during the week and longer on weekends, for example 100km audax a few weeks ago, 20-30 miles most Saturdays followed by 40+ on Sundays. I try to get to the gym once or twice a week too. Build up to it, listen to your body. I'm 63 by the way.

Hi bilbo,
I've been down a similar route burst ulcer, heart attack, diabetes and related to that neuropathy (there's a lifestyle message in there somewhere). So I started cycling about 18 months ago and its made an amazing difference to my overall health/weight and I've been able to reduced my medication. I'm working full time and work away from home once or twice a month so my cycling is restricted to once a week and the gym two or three times a week, I'm hoping to start upping my mileage in the next few weeks and replacing the night time at the gym with more cycling. As others say take it easy at first, and if you have any questions this is a great place for answers good luck! by the way I'm 61

Hi bilbobaggins i have just run into an old mate at the baths. he has just had a pig's valve fitted, and is already up to 36 L.
You have not said how far you can swim?
You can use this as a yard stick, for your fitness if you can do say 60 L in an hour.
You should be fine for the odd charity ride!
good luck Zoof
