Bought an old Dahon folder a while ago and just removed the inner gear cable from the twistgrip shifter without paying too much attention to how it fitted.... big mistake.
Spent an hour in the freezing today trying to figure out how to get the new cable to run in the grooves provided. Gave up and asked my good friend in the LBS to show me how it was done. He took to whole mechanism off the bars, threaded the cable through the initial hole ( that bit I'd already managed), turned his back on me for about 2 seconds then returned it to me fully working. The swine wouldnt explain how he did it and I hate not knowing, can anybody shed any light plse.

The shifter in the link is a cheapy shimano copy.

A proper S-Ram gripshift you just lever up part of rubber near the inner grip flange and the cable port is under it.

Some models have a little removable cover next to the barrel aduster as well.

Thanks chaps. The gripshift U tube clip did seem a bit different to mine?

I wasnt going to go into details because it's a bit difficult to explain, but

'1. I separated the two parts of the gripshift to remove the old cable and re threaded the new one under the rubber flap, so far so good
2, By separating the two parts of the gripshift I exposed a grooved "runner" along which "presumably) the cable should run..

But heres the problem, there seems to be no way to route the cable around the grooves AND allow the two parts of the gripshift to clip together.re-assemble without the cable obstructing that process??

You should have never pulled it apart.

The one in the vid is a Shimano and the cables only go in by dismantling them, they never go back together that well as they are pretty much disposable low end kit. Ignore the video as it does not apply to your shifter..

You have a proper SRAM gripshift - Pull the cable out and put the thing back together.

Now simply thread the cable back in through the port and it should come out through the cable barrel adjuster on it's own, it does not wrap around the spool before it exits the shifter as SRAM use 1/1 pull ratio on the shifter and mechs.

Thanks very much Zoiders I'll give that a try. It sounds almost too easy!!

I'm presuming that the underlying logic is that the cable is threaded when the shifter is set to the smallest sprocket and the cable will find the groove/runner by itself when the gripshift is rotated to find the larger sprockets....

BTW am I correct in thinking that these SRAM gripshifts can be replaced by Shimano lever type shifts cos they are 1:1 as well? I know that conversely Shimano rear mechs wont work with SRAM shifters as I found out to my cost

I too learnt the hard way not to remove the cable: I checked the SRAM website which does have lots of manuals with exploded diagrams, but I could not find my model anywhere (I could find the model name, but the picture did not match what I had :-(

SRAM shifters with a model number are meant to be run 1/1 with SRAM rear mechs.

SRAM shifters with a model "name" are meant to run with Shimano rear mechs.

You won't get an SRAM rear mech to run with a Shimano thumb lever/shifter that is indexed.

Thank you Zoiders, I can think of nothing more I need to know on the subject  Are you some kind of human velocepedal encyclopedia ....

I have the same problem with my daughter's Islabike; it has a Centera shifter which is different to the one in the youtube clip (it has a gear indicator window). I can't see an obvious way to replace the cable...
