This has probably been done over multiple times, but...

My Rival 22 11-32 cassette has seems to have a bit of a gap in the ratios, right where I use them most. Being as it's pretty darned flat round about these here parts, small spacing in ratios seems to be the order of the day, as it's subtle shifts in wind strength/direction that are the ruling factor.

I never use the 28 & 32 tooth sprockets (or the granny ring for that matter) whilst I do find myself hovering between the 17-19T ratios. What I really want is a 17-18-19T spacing, because it's struck me that quite a lot of the time that's a choice of spinning at 95-100rpm (a bit too high) and 80-85 rpm (a bit too low), whereas in the same circumstances 18T would have me solidly in my comfort zone of 85-95rpm.

Thing is, the SRAM rival PG1130 and PG1170 cassettes, whatever else they change, all have that 17-19T jump. Shimano, on the other hand, have the 105 CS-5800 12-25 cassette with it's creamy single tooth spacing from 12-19T and for sensible money.

I suppose the question is (and god knows, I've taken my time!) is whilst 105 11-spd is theoretically Rival 22 compatible; has anybody got actual experience of using a cassette from one with the other? I accept that shifts may not be quite as crisp, but is it actually noticeable in practice, etc?

Thanks in advance,

Russell

Thanks for the link, but I had a look at the Ultegra cassettes and *I think* the 105 12-25 is the only one with the 17-18-19T spacing.

I'm happy to be wrong though.

Duh! My bad, just spotted an Ultegra 12-25 hiding on their crappy website. It doesn't actually say they're the same ratio as the 105 item, but how different can they be?

Sram and Shimano cassettes are compatible. I am running a 105 10speed cassette on a Sram setup with no issues. I would run Sram but they cost twice as much as their Shimano equivalent.

Or ...

If you never use the small ring, why not ditch it and switch to a single chainwheel on the front. If you drop a few teeth, say to a 44t chainwheel, it will make you use the smaller sprockets and thus you will get the small 1 tooth jumps under your normal riding conditions. A 44x11 will give a 105" top, which is higher than I had when I started racing.

Good luck
