Sram Rival

I want to use a wide range (as in 11-27) cassette with Sram shifters and a compact chainset.

Is it possible to use a Sram MTB rear mech with these Shifters?
I take it that I need a long cage rear mech and a standard Shimano mech wont work.

I don't know - you can get a sram groupset with a compact chainset though so you might have a good chance.

Yes it'll work, as its one of the Rival options 50/34 + 12/27

Failing that the Sram X0 MTB mech is also a 1:1 ratio so will work perfectly with the rival/force/red shifters

BTW the 09 Sram X0 mech is so so sweet

Thats great news about the MTB rear mech working. As all the Sram rear mechs prefixed with X are 1:1 ratios I assume they'll all work.
