IMG_1087.jpeg Hi i am looking for some help regarding fitting my Sram Rival 1 chainset. I have been running a 40t for a year and wanted to change to a 44t the same SRAM Rival 1 Chainset which i bought yesterday. The problem i have when i put the 44t (second photo) through the bottom bracket it isnt flush and moves about. If you compare the 2 photos my 40t on the left has some sort of black plastic cover over the bearing and this makes it fit flush when i install it onto the bike but my new one on the right does not and it doesnt fit snugly when i install it. Spindle sizes are the same. Apologies as i am a newbie here but can anyone offer some advice please, any help would be appreciated thank you.

You could have just bought a new chainring and replaced the original one! Never mind - you could do that now. Maybe then sell the new chainset with the old ring to get some of your money back?

Many thanks for all the advice guys. I bought the 44t chainset as it was half price so it was a bargain. So from what i understand do i remove the 5 bolts with an Allen key From the front of the chainset And just swap over? Also what is the hidden bolt,is that somehow different than the others?
Really appreciate the help.

There's a nut 'of sorts' at the back which usually has a couple of notches in it. You can either invest in the proper tool (very cheap but rarely ever used) or use a wide-ish flat head screwdriver to place in the notches to stop it spinning round when you undo the front bolt with your allen key. You could use a dab of copper grease on the threads when you put the new chain ring on. Should take all of ten minutes to do and that includes removing the old and fitting the new but don't rush it as it's your first time.

Whilst I do have a Rival 1 groupset on my bike, I don't have the crankset, I have a Race Face Aeffect instead so I can't help out specifically with this crankset.

That said, have you checked out the SRAM technical documents? SRAM produce some excellent documentation that I find tends to be very clear and easy to understand. For the Rival 1 crankset there here:

Your initial problem is likely to be because the new crankset is for a 73mm wide bottom bracket shell and you have a 67mm bottom bracket shell on your bike.

Usually, you can add spacers between the bike and the BB cups (if this is indeed a bike with a threaded BB) to take up the gap.
