I have just had the chain off my bike for a diesel bath, and re-fitted it. It is an SRAM chain with one of those quick-links for joining it. I re-used the existing link; is it OK to do that?

I have a few spares lying about so no problem if I need to use a new one, but was just wondering if they are designed for single or multi use? Next big outing is the Glasgow to Edinburgh "Pedal for Scotland" charity ride next Sunday, so don't want the chain to break on me!

I've not seen any official word on it, but I generally use them several times and haven't had a problem - (so far!)

What speed is your chain Brandane? its perfectly OK to open and close 8 sp chains but 10 sp chains I believe have a permanent once only link, I'm not sure about 9 sp

I was going to say it's a very slow chain , which wouldn't be too far from the truth! It's an 8 speed; so should be fine. Thanks for the quick answers.

I have an SRAM PC850 - as far as I know it's multiple use, but I did buy extra spare quick links just in case, only £1.50 each.

Ditto for multiple use on 9 speed. You get a new one with a new chain so I use the new one while fitting and carry a couple of old links and a short length of chain for roadside repairs.

A mate recently went on a MTB instructor training course, one of their Top Tips was to carry a few SRAM Quicklinks for roadside repairs. They recommended using them many times and taking a few, in fact one of the instructor-instructors reckoned he had about 3 or 4 in use on his chain at the time.
