Well, as threatened, it's back from Germany fully working and is straight up for sale. The hub had seized in January, after 2200 miles of faultless service. SRAM have repaired/replaced the internals and returned it. This is apparently an extremely reliable hub and I was exceptionally unlucky. But enough of my 'winning' sales patter. The pictures are at my Flikr account here:-

You get, hub built into 36h Mavic A719 rim in black, cable, various axle nut fittings, 20t cog and twist shifter. Price £250 or VNO

ps. it's 135mm OLD spacing & 700c wheel.

It can be done but how easily depends on what sort of Galaxy frame, so:-

1. what is the rear spacing, if it's 135 then fine, if it's less, but the frame is steel, then it would be fine as well. It would either mean you spread the dropouts each time you install/remove the wheel or you respace the rear from, probably 130 to 135. My understanding is that the Galaxies are 135 from the mid 90's onwards, but couldn't swear to that.

2. the type of dropouts, if they are horizontal it's a straight fit, if vertical then you need some way of tensioning the chain. The three options for this would be:-

a. run a chain tensioner or an old rear derailler to provide the tension. This is ok but sort of defeats the purpose of a hub gear a little.
b. aim to set up the chain with a magic gear, this is basically getting exactly the right chain length. I've never done this on any bike but have seen some that swear by it and others say it's rubbish.
c. install a device called the Trikstuff Excentriker bottom bracket which converts standard bottom brackets to eccentric ones. Chain tension is then sorted by rotating the BB within the shell. This is apparently very good but bloody expensive for a BB, £150 at SJS Cycles.

I hope that helps.....Al
