Hi everybody (newbie here) I'm rebuilding a Giant bike that has SRAM ESP rear derailleur (7 speed) and Shimano front mech. I approached some fairly well known internet bike/spares sellers asking what gear shifts they had to sell that would fit my existing rear/front mechs. I want to replace the grip shifters for preferably trigger shifters.

I think I know what will work but I wanted some confirmation. I've ordered some SRAM x3 7 speed trigger shifters which are SRAM 1:1 gear shifts which means the same as ESP. Could anyone confirm my theory? Does ESP = "Equal Shift Process"?

One outfit offer a grip shifter SRAM which is a straight replacement which is OK and the other two offered a Shimano trigger shifters which I don't think will work. No-one seem to understand that you can buy (and they sell) SRAM rear mech compatible trigger shifters.

I suspect that the buyers (that's us) know more about the stuff these people are selling than the people trying to sell it.

Any comments?

SRAM ESP shifters have a 1:1 pull ratio for use with ESP mechs.
SRAM 'Rocket' shifters and Shi**no have a 1:2 pull ratio for use with Sh**no mechs.

So long as you get the number of sprockets right it couldn't be simpler..

The x3 should work fine - if you want confirmation see page 6 here. I understand some 1:1 components no longer have the ESP "label", don't know why. But their latest Exact components are close to 1:1, BUT different so aren't compatible, just to confuse the enemies customers...

Alas, lately Sh**no has also moved to something close to 1:1 for their 10 speed mtb stuff, they call it Dyna-sys, probably hoping we will junk all our 5/6/7/8/9 speed mtb gears since they are no longer compatible. Lovely.
