I've just bought a Sram PG850 8 speed cassette and the lockring is a plasticky looking black colour as opposed to silver as shown in Wiggle's photo. Anyone know why this is the case? Wiggle haven't been able to provide an answer.

What does it look like in the SRAM website? Maybe mail SRAM directly? Does it matter, it is unusable?

I've had Sram cassettes with a black lockring. It is still metal but with a different finish. I think it is called passivated or something similar and is just an alternative to the nickel or chrome finish you are expecting.

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. As long as it works properly. Would have preferred the chrome one from an aesthetic point of view but you can hardly see it once the wheel's replaced so not a big deal.

My SRAM lockring is black too, works fine and looks OK though I don't take the cassette off that often.

Mind you, the spec when I bought my tourer from EBC said it would have a Shimano 8-speed cassette (with slightly different intermediate teeth counts), but that's another story ...

Several places list a 'silver' lock ring. if the colour bothers you you could get one of these.
Wiggle list it but are out of stock. Why not ask them to send you one when they re-stock?

I had no idea people worried over trivia like this.
