Being doing a bit or reading i believe its a short tap for down and a prolonged tap for up (that'l take a bit of getting used to being a shimano user)

I also heard the biggest problem is the front shifting

anyone care to comment offer advice/guidance Im taking delivery of a new steed on Friday and its got sram red instead of what Im used to shimano.

I have just changed from Shimano to Sram. Transition took a couple of rides and for me it is now second nature. You still push to change to a larger cog but click to change to a smaller cog if that makes any sense.

I find it quite a positive action. Not clunky but more definite shifting rather than seamless like Shimano. Front changing is probably slightly tighter than Shimano, but not in a critical way. some people seem to have issues with Sram but as I mentioned I settled with it fairly quickly including on the drops.

SRAM what?

have SRAM X0 and X9 on mountain bikes and it is every bit as good as Shimano. Get's a bit getting used to after using Shimano but it doesn't take long,

SRAM gear has a very positive 'clicky' change, none of this vagueness you get with Shimano (eg. was that 2 or 3 gears I just dropped?) actually find the shifting more intuitive than the Shimano system.

One thing to watch out for is that last time I checked trim is on the top chainring only.

I've got SRAM Red on Lelly. I'm still running 105 on the Giant for commuting and I've not had any problems with the transition. The difference is where you'd give a long push on the brake lever to move up a cog on 105, you just give that push to the gear lever instead so it's the same hand and same motion (not like switching to Campag).

I find the actual gear change on Red to be extremely smooth and quick. What does take some getting used to is the "clunk" from the lever as you change, boy it's loud. You're not going to surprise anyone in a sprint!

I have Apex on one bike and 105 on another. I prefer the rear shifting of the apex and the front mech shifting of the 105. I find a lot of rub on the front mech comapared to 105 and on mine (microshift) front mech is really stiff with Apex. Also the Front mech needs such force to shift the brifter arm feels really flimsy.
