The BB on my virtuoso is getting crispy and a bit of play so i am guessing its time for a new one.
Last time i tried to install a new one with a plastic cup on the non drive side i shredded the cup head getting it in and it cross threaded and ended up replacing it with a bb with metal cups both sides.
Looks like the LBS only has a plastic cup sort in stock so any hints please ?

I haven't used the plastic version for a long time, but I don't recall having problems when I have in the past.

Sucking eggs time - I'd just do the obvious, make sure the threads are clean, (shell and catridge), make sure your tool is clean, (fnaar), use plenty of lube, (fnaar, fnaar), I tend to use white grease when installing a BB, and of course start it slowly and take your time with the threads.

Can`t even get the old one out , i really need a dedicated tool and a bike stand , guess it will have to wait till pay day and get the LBS to do it.
Took the skin off my palm so its in solid :cursing:

Argh! Copper slip is also a must on the threads when the new one goes in.

Have you tried undoing the drive side cup? I know it's an @rse about face way of doing things, and I'm not sure it will work, but it might, and then the non-drive side might be a tad easier to remove as well.

A stand is a great investment, but I'd still just have the bike on the floor to crack an old BB TBH. Once it's loose then the stand comes into it's own.

FYI, I got my stand a few years ago before the influx of Aldi/Lidl.ebay stands, but after a couple of mates got Aldi/Lidl ones I can say I'm very happy to keep the one I have TBH.

It's one of THESE and it's a cracker IME

Leverage is the answer here.

The square taper BB in my mtb which had been in place approx. 8 yrs failed to budge with a standard spanner. It was easy with a 4 ft aluminium pole slid over it.

Just be absolutely sure you're turning things the right way !

Just ordered a better BB tool, mine was a basic jobbie i have to try and hold the spanner onto and get leverage.

Its a while since I had to do this and I've only had to do it once, so hopefully I'm remembering this correctly.

The tip that helped me was to place the BB tool in place and then take the crank arm bolt that you have removed and use it to effectively screw the BB tool in place. You may need a large washer to on the crank arm bolt as well but then you don't have to worry about the BB tool slipping out of position.

Cheers , i will remember that although my current tool is to wide to make that work , the head stays the same width
