Squealing Brakes

I've got a Raleigh Cyclone with cantilever brakes. The front one is OK but the rear one squeals quite badly.

It works OK and there is plenty of material on the brake blocks. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Two schools of thought - at least.

1) Toe in the brake so that the front part of the brake block contacts the rim first just a tad.

2) Personally I keep my brakes blocks square then give the rim a good clean to get rid of the muck that collects there and wipe the blocks clean with a scouring pad - which works on my set up.

That's certainly the first thing I'd check.

I'm of the opinion that if a brake's squealing, it's working. Generally.

Ensure you grease the pivots. That alone will often cure squealing.
