Sorry, another question.

Took apart bottom bracket, cleaned and looked good, no signs of wear and the bearing looked fine in their cages. When they are all together again and regreased they aren't super smooth and are audible.

Should I pack more grease in them, or the bearings shot even though they look ok?

Scrap it and fit a cartridge BB

It's likely that you have just over-tightened it - ease it out very slightly and then test.

I'd always replace the bearings anyway as they take quite a bit of punishment there.

Measure the Bottom bracket width to ensure it is 68mm
measure the overall spindle length and compare against the list of lengths on the linky

or

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=34652 for a 73mm one. you will need a BB install tool but you can use this one again and again. if you can get the metal cup BB its better than the plastic as some fat fingered ones ( yes that would be me) can mangle the plastics

That Tange BB is from the 80's - not brilliant when new and I'd be very surprised if the races were ok now.

Get the new cartridge replacement.

mines 68mm/122mm. Gonna try a Shimano UN54 bracket as its cheap in the sale and good reviews (Cheers Simon.r). Only thing is mine has threads for nuts, so now need bolts.
