I recently picked up a Rene Herse NOS english thread freewheel body, and would like to build it up as a 5 speed 3/32 chain for a vintage tourer. Trouble is sprockets are a bit of a black art. What do I need? What are the best ratios for touring/road biking? Are there any old sprockets left in the universe at an affordable price?

You after a freewheel or cassette? Can't quite make it out.

However, for a freewheel you could try velodrama for IRD freewheels in 5 speed, I guess the ratio will depend on how fit you are and of course how far the rear mech will stretch?

Best of luck

Thanks for the good advice Hover Fly, I will probably take the latter course, I don't really need it, just got it "cos it was there"!
