They should have these in London & Bristol. Don't know if they'll be effective though - saw plenty of motorbikes in Southwark this morning using the cycle superhighway to get into the IMZ - Impatient Motorcyclists Zone  with many cyclists forced back.

I'd have thought most people understand what ASLs are for, they are pretty bloody obvious, it's just they aren't enforced so it's more a case of people who stop in them not giving a shoot rather than being ignorant of the law.

i mean, you'd THINK the picture of a cycle would give it away wouldnt you.... that and being the same colour as 'filled in' cycle lanes!!!

Just a though but are those signs advisory or enforceable? I can not remember.

Rectangle = advisory, just like the one letting people know that cyclists sometimes get off thier bikes.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
The very first UK ASL, in Oxford, had one of those signs. That was probably 20 years ago - I suspect that they've not been used in most places as people have got more familiar with them.

Lots of people don't give a shoot then.

"While using an ASL, 36% of cyclists experienced encroachment into the ASL reservoir by motorised vehicles. Over all ASL sites, 55% of vehicles encroaching were cars or taxis and 30% were motorcycles. Different types of vehicles encroached the ASL to different degrees: 68% of car drivers that encroached covered less than half the reservoir while 64% of motorcyclists (64%) covered the whole length of the reservoir.

The proportion of vehicles stopping past the stop line at control sites was 26% compared with 13% of vehicles stopping over the second stop line at ASL sites."

Nope, just rectangular and to be more precise, they are for information, rather than advise.

OK here we go I stand corrected

3.4.2 Blue signs Blue signs with white text and white borders are found on motorways, where all direction signing uses this colour scheme.

On non-motorway roads, the same colour scheme is occasionally used for signs bearing miscellaneous written information (such as advance warnings of weight restrictions). They are also used for direction signs for pedestrians and cyclists (which are always accompanied by a pedestrian or cycle symbol).
