Anyone had this kind of thing happen?
Yesterday, checked and adjusted tyre pressures at home with track pump.
Cycled 18 miles to work-no prob.
Stored bike in a handy store room behind my desk. Not hot, no diect sunlight.
Went out at lunch time for a 15 mile ride.
Returned bike to storeage room, no problems encountered on ride.
Two hours after returning from ride, while on the phone, heard a distinct pssssssssssssssssssssssssst noise.
Found front tyre had suddenly deflated. Bike was stationary. Found sizable hole in the tube, and nothing in the trye.
Replaced with new tube, inflated and rode 18 miles home no prob.
Tyre still inflated this morning (did not ride to work).

Any observations? It was a bit bizzare to say the least.

Cheap tube? Faulty tube?
Tyres, tubes and valves are mysterious things with lives of their own.

I managed to do that to my step-father's bike yesterday... checked the tyres, both were very low but not flat, so inflated them. went to put the bike back in the garage a couple of hours later and rear tyre was totally flat. I am assuming that the old inner tube has perished, but have not yet looked at the situation (that's Friday's job).

It's happened to me at a stop at Delamere train station. Was sat there having a drink and chatting to a couple of other cyclists there and suddenly 'BANG' didn't half make me jump! Can only summise that a thorn had made its way in and then the rubber gave way. Certainly startled the 3 of us.

Was the hole on the tyre side of the tube (outside) or the rim side (inside)?

I had one do exactly that a couple of weeks ago and it turned out the rim tape had a tear and the tube was slowly expanding to bursting point through the spoke hole.

You only get a bang when the tube has managed to get out of the tyre.
You will probably have trapped the tube between the tyre bead and rim when you last fitted the tyre, leaving a small section of tube on the outside. The pressure of the tyre on the rim mostly keeps it sealed off, but once any air starts to get into it you get a runaway inflation of a bubble of tyre, which then bursts.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Yes - had that happen - on a wheelchair. Cheap and nasty inner tube, as supplied by NHS:thumbsdown:. User was sitting nearby, as it noisily deflated, good thing I was close by with puncture repair kit. The tube had a number of very thin, almost transparent, imperfections, and was replaced ASAP.

Interesting thanks :hello:

Got any small slits or splits in the tyre ?.
I ran a tyre with what I thought was a small nick in it that'd be ok. Innertube inflated ok and held, so away I went.
Several days or weeks later, not minutes later, it suddenly gave and deflated. The inner tube was slowly forcing itself out of the tyre through the nick...then gives up the ghost just when you think all's ok.

+1

A friend recently had a similar problem and went through 5 inner tubes in the space of 10 miles. We replaced the rim tape and it turned out to be slits along the tyre bead that were not visible unless you pulled the tyre apart all the way round, it was a Continental tyre that was failing and has been sent back to the manufacturer. Inspect the tyre very closely for anything abnormal.

Yes I have! It's a probable cause. Thanks for your help. Will have a look at tube/tyre later and if they match up that's the cause.

Thanks gbb
