The last time I bought a spoke key there was only one size (that I was aware of) and it probably cost me a pound or less. It worked on all my road bikes and mountain bikes at the time. Having just checked ebay, there appear to be about 6 or 8 different key sizes. Is that right? Is the single-size spoke nipple now out of fashion, and if so what key size should I be looking for? I like a tool to last a lifetime, and the only reason I'm buying a new one is my toolbox and bike got stolen along with the car.

I have a Fat Spanner Multi shown below. I think it is great, because it has 4 slots for different sizes, and most importantly to me it grips not just 3 sides but 4 (by the bits that stick out near the 1 and 3 labels), so works even on alloy nipples that have been butchered by others' spoke keys. Although inexpensive it is not made of cheese, like many do.

I personally would avoid any that can do only one size, too much trouble when out and about and don't know what size will be needed. They are quicker and easier for wheel building however.

Glad you pointed out that key has 4 sizes, as I took a cursory look and only noticed two. Thanks for the recommendation.

Home toolkit is a Park Tools one. Excellent

Out and about it's a crank tools multi. Only ever used it once, and it was to remove someone else's snapped spoke before we hit a descent.
