the outer has split on the rear mech cable on my mountain bike.

how straightforward is the replacement? the shifters are shimano trigger types, and the rear mech is avlio/acera (one of the two) 7 speed.

it's currently running ok on the 3rd biggest sprocket, although i assume it will settle on the smallest one when i take the old cable off.

any advice/warnings?

cheers in advance

Pretty easy. you can just replace the outer with a new bit cut to the same size or fit a whole new cable. If the end of the cable is frayed you might have problems getting it through the new outer, if so then a new cable will be easier. Also, cutting the cables without the right tools can be tricky. What to do is practice on the old parts until you find a way to get clean cuts. You can cut inner cables neatly with pliers etc but it is tricky.

Set the barrel adjuster on the rear mech to round about the middle of its range before you line up the cable/rear mech so that you can adjust it either way to tweak the setting.

Really straightforward and for the minimal cost would replace the inner cable as well.
