Ouch. I can't un-see that. Pretty disturbing picture.

Splinters are what you get if you deck out on a wooden Velodrome. That’s quite a splinter though

It's not the first though, and it won't be the last. I remember Awang getting a splinter right through a calf muscle at the Manchester velodrome. Lisandra Guerra got one through an arm. Jason Queally got pinned to the track by a massive splinter through his back!

Surprised they don’t use another material with today’s health & safety.

It's very rare - but I've seen an U14 rider last year who ended up with several large splinters from a crash on the old Manchester track. Nasty.

Me neither - I found her story when searching for the other 2!

They ought to try to come up with some way of preventing the wooden boards splintering. I don't know how they would do it... Some kind of bonding material injected into wood at high pressure perhaps? The challenge would be to come up with something that still rode like a conventional wooden board.

I showed it to someone at work who was carrying on about some f**tballist who had broken a finger-nail, getting a bruise, or whatever
