spitting

When cycling on the canal towpath I sometimes push myself a little and get a bit out of breath etc. I find a build up of saliva in my mouth and swallowing would mess up my breathing for a second so its easier to spit. Anyone else do this...only do it when there is nobody within 100 metres or so and aim into the canal. spitted hardly ever and always get disgusted by people who do it in the street etc. Just seems to be the right thing to do when I am cycling hard.

Nope , I don't do it and i don't like seeing other people do it. I have noticed a lot of "yoof" do it out of habit or perhaps they think they look "ard", to me it is disgusting to spit in public. i find my mouth gets dry when pushing myself hard so quite the opposite to you.

I used to get a build up like that when I first returned to cycling but never really get it unless I ride at a very high intensity, like up around max heart rate territory.

I have noticed that if I really push the pace with friends that they will sometimes end up spitting and I have wondered if it's something to do with approaching lactate threshold.

Spitting only when necessary such as when an errant fly has taken a wrong turn. However, I do try to be discreet about it and wait until I am not in sight of any pedestrians or passing motorists and then it is always aimed straight down and into the gutter. No points to be gained for spitting on car windows or trying to break the distance spitting record xx(
