Folks, may have got the term wrong but when you remove the wheels off the bike ( say to fix a puncture) what is the correct way to set the wheels when you replace it. How do you know the tension is correct when you push over the lever. I don't want to stretch the spindle but don't want it loose either. How many turns at each end, is there a correct way ??

Thanx in advance. Hutch.

You certainly wont stretch the spindle but too tight may cause premature bearing wear, have a look here

A QR spindle is to hold the forks together - not clamp the wheel in. Technically you can ride withour a QR in there as the forks si on the axle that the QR passed through. as this vit stays static and the bearing spin around it, you are as it says, stopping it popping out.

So, asy way is put the lever to closed, tighten the nut until it is finger tight, undo the leaver, give it another half to one turn and reengage the leaver.

Front fork - leaver on NDS rinning horizontally towards the cranks.

Rear fork - leaver on NDS either as above, horizontal or up at 10 o'clock between chain stay

Loch side.
Skewer and Quick Release (QR) adjustment has a preload effect on the bearings that needs control and consistent application.

Have a look at this brochure on the topic.
