my average speed is 14 mph on the flat - 12/13 mph on hilly - I am 70 yrs old - there must be some norms for older riders - the speeds I have quoted are for 50/60 miles - I need to know whether I should satisfied with what I am achieving or not

Disgraceful, if you haven't achieved 20mph uphill into the wind by the time you're 90 I'd give it up mate.

Seriously, as long as you enjoy the ride why worry about the numbers?

Lots of people half your age would be pleased with those numbers.

I'm nearly 64 and you'd leave me behind!

Half? He's more than 3 and a half times older than me and I'd be pleased with that speed.
I should really start trying harder. But as has been said before, if you're enjoying your self you're doing it right.

I do hope I'm still cycling when I get to 70

I used to see my friend's grandad out on his bike quite often, he was in his nineties by this time

If you really feel the need to go faster have a look at what John Woodburn does 23 minute 10s which is about 26mph at 76.

That aside I know of plenty of people who could not even get a bike out of the shed let along ride it for the length you do, keep pedaling and keep smiling.
