So, I've lost my turbo specific skewer...

Hooked it up last night with the normal skewrer and made sure I had adjusted the turbo clamping twisty thing so that it was reasonably tight. No signs of movement so I gingerly mounted the bike and had a little go. Seems ok - what you think, ok to continue with a normal skewer if no movement or am I asking for trouble?

Depends on shape of the head of the skewer you're using. If it has a protruding and "rounded" head and wasn't rubbing on the frame then you might be ok. Personally, if I was in any doubt I'd get a proper skewer. I fell off my turbo trainer once (due to stupidity in not tightening it properly) and don't want to repeat the experience.

There's some info on the attached vid'.

As above - it depends on what your 'normal' skewer looks like - and how close it is in looks to the turbo skewer. Without knowing what either skewer actually looks like, it's difficult to offer an opinion.

Well the normal is an old Planet X one and the specific is an Elite one. Granted that the skewer ends are more squared off and bulbus. Designed to hold more of the end inside the clamping mechanism and I get that, just wondered what the general conscensus was having read a couple of other posts elsewhere. I have a feeling that I might just be better off buying a replacement, for peace of mind of nothing else.

Looking at the PlanetX one, it doesn't look as if you'll have enough metal inside the cup of the clamp and it could work loose. My advice would be to replace, just for peace of mind. :okay:

I lost mine a while ago. I use the normal one which I'm sure won't come off but it doesn't seat as well and so when you are really giving it some stick it makes a grunching noise as it moves about in the holder. There's some wear on the skewer from this but not enough to concern me. Provided it doesn't move about and you'll know from noise and markings if it does, it should be OK, if not, it probably still should be OK.

I have changed my mind a few times on this one Crax. Initially thought 'no way' then changed it to 'it'll be ok' then swayed back to the former. If there was a fence nearby, I'd definitely be perched on it by now...

Get a new one and you can be sure the lost one will turn up soon after!!

I'd be tempted to get an allen key 'security' skewer, the allen key end is perfectly circular and should locate in the cups of the trainer a lot better plus you can get the skewer a lot tighter in the frame.

Replace it - kind of the inverse of your problem but I (stupidly) thought it was ok to use the turbo skewer to go out cycling with as well until it snapped - luckily not when I was riding it and I was only 10 minutes from the house by car so Mrs Fu brought down the proper skewer. Dread to think if it has snapped when I was riding it.

Yes, I lost mine so ordered a replacement and guess what....? The old one turned up a few days later.
