I am looking to get a decent Commuting bike for work inside £1000 through the Bike to Work scheme. I tried the Specialized Tricross Sport 2010 (£850.00) and the Genesis vapour 2009 (£850.00) at the weekend. I liked the Specialised but it didn't a) have enough room to fit full mudguards and ;) didn't come with clip-in pedals. In addition to this it was a little heavier than the Genesis which offered pedals, room for mudguards and had slightly better crank and components.

I'm going to wait for the 2010 Genesis to come in and try that but wondered if there is anything else people would recommend I try before commiting? I'm limited by whats available at the Edinburgh Bike Co-op. I may consider going elsewhere if I can get interest free credit but it would have to be a very very good value bike to beat the tax breaks offered by the Bike to Work scheme.

Any advice appreciated.

Just a point of order........

You can get full mudguards on a Tricross. I have fitted SKS Chromoplastics on mine - and they fit even with Mud 2 Cyclocross tyres on!!

Most bikes in that price bracket do not come with pedals. Not decent ones anyway.

Gary.

Well after some consideration and the limitation of ordering from the stock available at one store, I have decided on the 2010 Genesis CDF. Should be here in three weeks - review to follow.....
