Specialized Inner Tubes

I buy Specialized Standard Road Tubes - Size: 700 x 20/28 Presta 32mm valve - but I find a common problem. The presta valve appears to break off easily and then I can’t pump them up. Initially I put the pump on top to inflate, and then I guess sometimes its difficult to pull the pump off at the end, and gradually the presta valve loosens and comes off. I actually have several inner tubes now without the presta valve bit which have no punctures but can’t be pumped up, can these be fixed at all? Does anyone else have this problem? Can I get new tubes of the same dimensions with Schraeder valves? Thanks!

I had the same problems with a Specialized tube. I think it was my fault though as I was a little too rough and a little too sideways when i took the pump off and snapped the top part of the valve off.

The rest of valve didn't half fly out with a bang though. Could have been nasty.

I always take a little more care now when removing the pump and make sure I hold the valve as well and havent had any problems since.

I always use Spesh tubes but have never had this. I will be sure to exercise some caution when removing the pump after inflating.

It's not just Specialized tubes, I've snapped the little top off several different valves.

I stopped using Specialized tubes because of exactly this fault. I had three split within weeks.
I now stick to Schwalbe tubes and have never had the problem again.

I've not used Spesh tubes in years because of a similar problem the night before a club run I thought I'd top up the pressure in my tyres, snap, spare tube, snap. I had a 3rd tube but it was my spare put that in and tried to fix the tubes to carry as a spare. Sod's law I get my 1st p'ture on the club run and my first in over 10,000km, put the spare tube in but the repair was a bad one :-( I've used various tubes since Scwalbe, Continental, Mitchelin, Duro (?) Innova (?), Cheng Schin, Areo (?) and probably a few others and never suffered a valve/tube failure again in that time.

I've had it as well with the specialised tubes too, the brass pin seems to be brittle, whereas with other tubes I usually bend them

Get a track pump for pumping tyres at home

When out get a pump that has the old fashion screw on end, this will prevent breakages

How do people cope without a track pump?! I can't imagine trying to get 130psi into a tyre using a 'normal' pump all the time. Would drive me mad.

I have nothing but Spesh tubes now, I've bought two multipacks of 10 and have 4 bikes using them, plus spares in 3 pro storage bottles and a little stack in the garage. Not had a puncture in one of these yet and not had a problem with the valves, have swapped around tyres quite a bit so it's not like they haven't seen any pump action.

What exactly is the problem people get? is it the inner core snapping off or is it the whole valve splitting away from the tube?

I've found I need to carefully loosen the screw in bit when new but then it moves freely after that. Generally pumped up with a track pump but have tested out my Topeak Morphs on them as well.

+1. The reason all my rides have Schraeders.

I have no issues getting my wife's Speed-Pro tyres up to 120psi with Schraeders and they stay up without any issues too. The idea you need Prestas to keep high pressure in goes back to the truly lousy Woods valves of my youth, they did seem to give up the ghost under high pressure.
