Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a Specialized Allez 16 (I'm hovering over the checkout button right now), but before I do, I just want to make sure it's worth it. £450 is a lot of money for me, but am I right in thinking that, for a new bike, you get quite a good bike for the money? Also, is the frame of good enough quality to be a base for upgrades?

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Many people love their allez on here, they are priced about right for the level of equipment they have.

If like me money you want the most bang for your buck you could do worse than look the bikes from Decathlon...

I use a carrera virtuoso for most of my cycling and it is cheaper and a little heavier and no carbon fork to absorb the road "buzz" but a good entry level bike , i certainly notice the difference when i get the "weekender " bike out.The virtuoso is a steal for last years model at £289.I have done long rides on this bike and it was fine.

If you plan to upgrade the bike it may be cheaper to try to get a higher spec bike straight away as this years models are being discounted atm and buying parts separately will cost more in the long run.

If you can get down to an evans shop and have the cash try and barter them down. You would probably get it down to £400. I got the sport model for £500 with a bit of bartering and cash ready.

Have had an entry level Allez 24 for a couple of years and it's been a great bike for me. It's done plenty of miles here and in France with very little servicing and has never let me down. I'm starting to think about upgrading a few bits but to be honest since getting it serviced before going to France in Aug, everything is working nicely. Only things I've changed are the pedals and tyres.

I'm currently borrowing a Virtuoso of a friend, and it is quite a good bike - I do like the idea of a carbon fork though! As for the Decathlon, I was planning on getting that very bike but it's out of stock in nearly every store, and the only store which will deliver to me (Surrey Quays) is one of those with no stock. I've ordered my Allez now and am very much looking forward to its arrival

There isn't any evans store's near me, and according to their website they're out of stock for my size anyway (well, they were a few days ago, their website's being updated right now). I ended up getting an Allez from McConvery Cycles for £450

You will not regret buying a Specialised Allez - go to £500 and attempt to buy the Allez 18, the extra cost is well worth it! My daughter bought one a few months ago for £500 at her LBS in Richmond.
