SPD-SL pedals and road shoes

as I'm getting very sore and crampy feet, and not only on long rides with SPD cleats, I'm thinking pf trying a pair of road pedals and shoes (I realise I won't be able to do my usual shopping and pottering, I'll have to live with that).

A couple of questions. I have very wide feet, and having tried on some shimano, specialized and Louis garneau shoes in Evans, they all felt narrow unless I went to a too big shoe. So any advice on shoes up to £100 for wide size 43/44s

Then pedal wise - which are the most user friendly especially in traffic for someone with dodgy knees? Shimano? Look? I'd rather not spend more than £50 on pedals and cleats which seems realistic?

Something like this with the yellow cleats?

Or anything better? I'm not looking for the lightest ultimately

Cheers in advance

Can't go wrong with the R540s; decent pedal at very good price.
I'm sure shimano do a wide fit shoe?

If you want to do shopping and pottering, why don't you try toe clips to wear with some comfy shoes with a stiff sole.
I got some from Evans with suade tips. I find them very easy to use and my feet are held loosely but securely.

I've tried straps and clips before, I can't get my head around them. I'm fine with clipless, just having issues with pain in my feet now. I've got a new pair of SPD shoes to try as well

Thanks, I've tried the R088 before when I was looking for a new SPD shoe but rejected on the basis on the slipperyness, not going to get away from that with SPD SL! They were a 44, so your option isn't available

In my wiggle basket right now, I have these...

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-womens-wr32-spd-sl-road-cycling-shoes/ - the new SPD ones are women's shimano and they seem ok walking around the house, but not tried on the bike
And a dhb carbon wild card http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-r20c-carbon-road-cycling-shoe-1/

Specialized are quite wide fitting. They size up small length wise, similar to Shimano so best to try before you buy.

Specialized tend to be wide fitting too, but if you order the Gaerne I'd be interested to know how they are, as I nearly ordered some of their winter boots a while back, but got a better deal on Lake ones. The Lake are a slightly narrow fitting for me, but seem to have given a little over time & are now nice & cosy in winter without being too tight

I never really took to SPD-SL pedals, ceven the light ones primarily as I found they tneder to over rotate making clipping in harder. My pedal of choice is the Look Keo 2 Max which are a little over budget on Wiggle at £56 http://www.wiggle.co.uk/look-keo-2-max-pedals/

I find they give me a lighter movement when clipped in and a lighter release than SPD or my current Mavic Crossroc SL pedals on my , currently poorly, commuter.

I'm assuming you can't use Shimano cleats with Look pedals? So I'd need to change cleats and pedals if I don't get on with the SPD-SL? I'm accustomed to the pedal always being the wrong way round as I ride A600 and M324 right now, drive me mad!

I'm not sure which bike these will go on initially - the carbon which hasn't yet been out this year or the Genesis which has (but I think I'll be doing Ride 100 on the carbon)...choices, choices! My cycling physio is going to do a fit next week, so again I need to decide which bike to use aargh

On your SPD set up are you using the M520 pedals ? If so you could try the wider fitting A530 pedal which may help or try a pair of stiff soled mtb shoes.

I have some Scott's which I have had for years and they are very stiff soled and wide fitting. I would recommend though for a shoe fit purchasing these from a LBS rather than on line.

A600 and M324 are the ones giving me bother. I think it's the size of the cleat as much as the pedals. I've got Specialized Sonoma which are fine until I start pedalling! I have some Tahoes too but the cleats are in the wrong position and the bolts are rounded off  I don't recall them being especially comfortable either

The issue with shops is they have a limited range, a big Evans had just 4 pairs I think under £100, yes they can order more in but I'd rather try them at home and feel under no pressure to buy  I might go into London on Saturday and have a mooch and try on. It's been a while since I had a drool in Condor anyhow

I'll try to get to Sigma too - although knowing what they have on the shop floor, they'll keep the budget models to their website and in store every pair will be £200+ !
