I need to adjust my left shoe so that my foot points out ever so slightly. I know that you can move the cleat forwards or backwards and side to side but should i angle the cleat to the right slightly, this will hold my foot outwards.

Yes, you need to angle your cleat so your foot points in its natrual direction, have a look at the sticky in general cyclin it'll explain more and it'll probably contain reference to this, which I think is also a good explanation :-)

My right shoe is ok its just my left knee that is giving me some ache. Looks like I am just going to have to try it. I have a set of Allen keys in my saddlebag so I can adjust it when I am out if need be. A bit wary of going out on my bike now

As someone has said before you need your foot to be in the angle it is at when resting.
Best way to do this is sit on a table and look how your foot is angled when it is hanging naturally, that is how it should be when clipped in.
Note there is no quick way to do this, just move it slightly then go for a 30 mile ride and see how it was.

I did mine by sitting in a chair with feet on the ground until they were comfortable. Similar principle I guess.

Similar but you might not get it spot on with that method. The important factor is natural.

That is why I say go for a 30mile ride. Spend some time in them and see just how comfortable that position is when your legs are pumping
