Mine have done six months mountain biking and about 3000 miles commuting, so I'm not surprised they have become notchy and noisy.

However, before chucking them in the bin, can the bearings be replaced?

They are quite basic ones that say 'SHIMANO' on the side, c2004, and they came as standard on my Stumpy FSR...

Thanks

With Shimano it's usually the surrounding bits that wear out not the bearings. It's a very fiddly job and with the cost of bearings it's probably cheaper to buy a new pair!

I just put the pedal in a vise and use a big pare of pliers.

Hmm....they used to include that tools with the pedals some time ago...

I've taken apart a pair of the *original* SPD (737 ? - early 90's ) many years ago - I think the axle of some of the current ones is quite similar, but you need a couple of quite small spanners to adjust the cone that's at one end.

You may not need to replace your bearings. Unscrew the collar using the special plastic tool, take out the axle assembly, half-fill the hole with grease, and put back together. I have a working set of SPDs from the early 90s maintained by this method, and I've never touched the bearings themselves.

That could be worth a go, thanks!

I hate throwing anything away without trying to revive it.

They used to include the stripping tool with SPDs, then Madison stared taking them out of the box and charging for them - the gits.
