Obviously if your running normal 240V power outside thru your garden it needs to be be in armoured cable.

What is the rules with 24VDC? I.e. if I step down the power using a 24V 36W driver to connect to LED lighting strips rated for outdoor use (IP68), can I run use unprotected 2 core cable outside to connect everything up (with any connections in IP65 rated boxes).

For clarity the Driver and controller will be inside house (or inside IP65 rate protection box)

However, it would be advisable to still use some some of mechanical protection (conduit or something). Pests nibbling through cable won’t differentiate between SELV and 230v, and similarly a spade will go though any non-protected came very easily!

Agreed, it runs in a small channel between decking and fence, you couldn't spade attack it if you tried. I'd got the sensible precaution bit covered, it was making sure of the regs compliance I needed.
