I recently got myself a turbo trainer and to avoid having to change tyres each time I want to to an outdoor/indoor ride, I am going to get a spare wheel that I can fit the trainer tyre onto and just swap wheels over.

Trying to find the right combination of bits I will need to make this happen.

My bike is a Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc (2016). Having looked up the spec of what I have just now, am I basically looking to find like-for-like or does it matter less if only needing the wheel for purposes of the TT?

I have a Shimano 9 speed cassette 11-34, wheel is 700c, unsure of width of rim (although inside it does say 1910x20 if that helps?)

Does having disc brakes make a difference to the type of wheel I should be shopping for? Am I able to buy a wheel with cassette all ready to go?

Any help, gratefully received. Noob here but not afraid to get my hands dirty with some DIY.

Why would you need to do that, My turbo bike has been on there for 5 years and gets well used, the tyre is still going strong.

Is OLD on the op's disc brake hub not likely to be 135mm vs 130mm on a rim brake hub?

I've never used a special tyre/wheel for the turbo and never experienced problems. With normal tyres costing less than £20, I would just use what you have until you get a problem and then find a solution.

I would add though, if you only have the one bike and can't afford another, having another complete pair of wheels, fitted with slightly heavier tyres for winter conditions makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for repliea.

Maybe I didn't explain properly.

I have one bike. And yes its the model on the link from Evans website above. I want to use the turbo trainer when the weather turns crap or on days where I cant get out for a ride.

I bought a trainer tyre as the hybrid tyres on my bike were too knobbly and making a hell of a noise.

I want a spare wheel that I will fit the trainer tyre onto so that when im indoors I can remove my outdoors hybrid tyre wheel and attach the trainer wheel.

I don't have the space to have a completely separate bike for TT use, hence only wanting a wheel that I can swap out.

Try and get a spare wheel with same make of hub. You can forget the disc.

The reason I say this is some free hubs are slightly different from others and the cassette can be in a slightly different alignment so your gears need re-indexing. This used to happen to me with a hope hub vs shimano. I knew that the gears needed two clicks on the mech so it was a quick job.

If you use a 'turbo trainer only' wheel, as @fossyant says, vital the 9 speed cassette is aligned exactly the same on both hubs. You will not wish to adjust your RD. I'd also consider a closer ratio cassette as you do not need the big sprockets.

Unless you have a smart trainer and you are climbing a big hill so may want normal gears. I do use my 39x24 on Zwift for the final climb on Watopia some times.
