How old is the bike, if vintage it may need a wheel with 126mm spacing...new wheels for road bike are mainly 130mm.

Then you'll need a tyre, inner tube and cassette.

No that's all you need. TBH I've always just used the existing road tyre - if adjusted correctly, it won't damage the tyre, but that depends upon how long you intend to stay on the turbo.

I use a second wheel for the turbo as I got fed up of changing tyres over, the tyre does shred far quicker on a turbo as can be seen with the amount of rubber dust that collects on the turbo mat around the flywheel and I didn't want to ruin an expensive tyre so just use a cheap vittorio on there now, in fact I've found that the cheaper tyres last longer as they tend to be a little harder but decathlon do a cheap turbo specific tyre for about £15. Try your local bike recycle shop as I found an aero alloy rim for £5, I had an old 12-25 cassette knocking about which is slightly different to the one I normally ride with. It does suffer very slightly with indexing noise but this can normally be sorted with a half click on the shifters.

I find it far better as sometimes I found that I was avoiding the turbo as I couldn't be bothered to mess about swapping tyres but now I only avoid it just because I'm lazy.

I have a turbo specific bike, in other words one that has gone down the line. Mind you it is 653 with Ultegra so maybe a bit over the top. Think not only about tyre damage which to be honest is not a lot but also about corrosion which can be a bigger worry.

Yeah completely agree about the corrosion I had my darling wife knock up a sweat bra that straps between the bars and seat post as the sweat drops from nose to cross bar perfectly.

My experience too. If you Intend really hard training then it may be better to have a seperate wheel, but if like me, you intend to just maintain fitness for up tp an hour at a time say, normal wheel and tyre as fossy says, correctly adjusted does no damage whatsoever. Thats been my experience over 4 or 5 years.
