dabbling with the idea of doing some these this year.

i can ride for 4-5 hours but at a very slow pace compared to racing. what should i be doing over the next 6 weeks in prep for first race to increase speed?

hill sprints , high intensity?

How much does it cost to Oldham?
sounds about right-ride your MTB as much as you can as well.

High intensity intervals.

Also do some near race-pace rides, say one a week, of the expected duration of your race.

Careful not to overtrain, you'll probably need a recovery day after intervals to get the full benefit.
