Depends - what sort of bike, how long have you been cycling, and how long are the rides.

Pain and aches can be perfectly normal especially if you aren't used to the time in the saddle. If you cycle this distance regularly, and start developing pain then things need looking at.

Can you give us some more information !

Your 'bars are set low (no spacers) between the steerer tube and the stem clamp, but then again your saddle doesn't seem to be unreasonably high in comparison, have a look at www.bikefitting.com find your nearest participating LBS and arrange for a measure up session.

Is the bike the correct size for you? On compacts, you usually have masses of saddle post showing. You pic hasn't, which suggests that it might be too big, causing you to over reach, hence the pain.

I get that and find when I conciously relax my grip on the handlebars it helps, sometimes I'm holding them as though my arms do the work not my legs!

There does look to be a long reach from saddle to the bars - but then some people have long bodies and shorter legs.

Do your elbows feel sore as well?

Maybe a shorter stem (or a stem with an angle so it raises the bars higher) might help?

I had this problem on my bike and a shorter stem sorted it out.

I would say that the reach does seem a little stretched compared to the saddle/pedal distance. this could be the cause of your problems.

Is this the first road bike you have had? I remember when I changed from hybrid to road bike my shoulders ached for a while as they were adjusting to the change in loading.

My advice would be to take it to your friendly LBS and ask them to just check the sizing, it could be as simple as fitting a shorter stem.

Lovely bike by the way, if you do find it's far too big and you need to get a new one... I'll buy it off ya (if it's 56-59cm)!

Once you have the fit sorted,if it is that, remember to relax your arms and upper body, you can sometimes be tense without realising it holding on to the bars to hard.

crickey, who knows... quite a whack I reckon. know from experience that when you build a bike you put a lot of time, money and effort into it.

really love the frame & wheels though. next bike I buy will have to have the radial cut away section in the downtube though. looks smashing!

my first geared road bike was a Claub Butler San Remo, an entry level bike to see if i liked them. Most recently I have built a fixed gear bike on a vintage frame... which I ride all the time as it is much better than the Claud Butler.
my next purchase will be a new, better geared bike. something along the lines that you have made. someting i can use to race and ride TTs.
