Sora STI - where's my cable gone?

Idiot that I am, I didn't tighten the rear gear cable enough at the derailluer and as I was running through the gears, the cable sucked itself into the STI shifter at the cable entry point.

No amount of pushing will release the cable, I've removed the front cover but still no joy getting it back out. Anyone else experienced this?

Whilst pulling on the cable where it exits the shifter to run down to the gear mech, release the tension (i.e. as you would to shift to a smaller cog). Once you have released as much cable tension as possible, the cable nipple should now be in the position where you can push it out of the shifter (you may need to remove the little rubber cover that is exposed when you pull the brake lever).

Thanks, for some reason I was only getting 2 clicks from the shifter which wasn't enough to show the nipple. I eventually got enough clicks after a bit of messing about, simple in the end.

I love it when a plan comes together...

What was really good was the pair of shifters I bought second hand, where it seemed the guy had removed them by the simple process of snipping-off the cables where the entered the shifter and then had worked the shifter up and down through the gears a few times.
Result was a shifter with about an inch of cut-off cable inside, which had started to unravel and fray and jam itself in the mechanism.
Took me about an hour with a magnifying glass, strong light and two watchmaker's screwdrivers to get the bloody thing out...:smile:!
