Easiest thing would be to get your hands on some 2013 Sora shifters as they changed design to remove the thumb shifter and place it behind the brake lever like the rest.

Upgrading to Tiagra or 105 would, I believe, mean moving to 10 speed so would need a new cassette and chain as a minimum.

Tiagra 4500 (double) or 4503 (triple) would work

Sorry how would the tiagra 4500 double work ? Would i not need triple.
Correct, you would need the triple version. Beware though the Tiagra 4500 series are old and therefore difficult and expensive to get hold of (I have tried).

One of my Sora shifters broke last year and I replaced it with Sora 2013, it was nice to get the paddle shift and lose the thumb shifter!

The thumb shifter set up only really works well IMHO if you ride solely on the hoods. I used to have thumb shifters until I upgraded. The difference in smooth changing down is phenomenal I think.
As someone has already said, sti shifters are expensive. Mine were about £150 for the pair(105) but if you ride a lot I think the difference in shifting(especially down) is worlds apart. I think the thumb shifter arrangement is a real piece of garbage. But cost effective I guess.

True if you jump from Sora to 105, but Sora 2013 is pretty well just as clunky as Sora with the thumb shift IMO. I found Sora 2013 (I will remember the model number one day!) for £85 from one of the German online retailers. I agree with stretching to 105 STi if the budget allows, then you lose the thumb shifter and get much slicker shifts.

Thanks im no snob or connoisseur on shifters, and ive tolerated them long enough. Its just the thumb part that annoys me,ive big hands and find it almost impossible to change in the drops. Thanks for all replies.

They were pricey, you're right on that one. But I changed everything to 105. That's why I took the plunge. But it won't suit everyone's pocket.
