Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is allowed... I was kind of hoping to have somewhere I could basically log my process and talk about crap and figure out what the hell I'm doing.

I posted the "Strong bike for fat chap" thread a couple of weeks ago and there were seriously helpful replies.

So the stats.

I'm 31, 135KG (I put 130 in my last thread but it turns out I was much fatter than I thought), Smoker, completely out of shape, basically a bit of a shambles at the moment. I used to play a considerable amount of American football and was pretty good at it but I've always been a big chap. My ultimate goal is to be 100kg, but a reasonable healthy 100kg with a decent amount of muscle mass and a considerable drop in my enormous fat content.

I'm also trying to stop smoking... Which is going well some times and not so well other times...

I ended up buying a Norco Charger 7.2 from Evans. It cost £750 and I got a decent amount of gear to go with it. Winter gloves, helmet, shoes, USB lights, pump, multi tool, 3/4 shorts with padded baselayer, jacket... Pretty well kitted out.

I started out just riding up and down my road. My thighs and arse absolutely killed after the first few rides but I've learned to shift my weight back on the seat and I'm usually fine the day after a ride now.

It turns out my cardio fitness is truly horrific as you might expect of a very fat smoker... I love the mountain bike and thoroughly enjoy trails. Did Llandegla blue acouple of weeks ago and it took me 1 hour 30 mins or so but got around the bloody thing! I'm going back at the end of november and hoping to bring it down to 1hour 10. Seems like a big jump in six weeks but it was basically my second time on the bike. Struggled with gearing and couldn't get up the gentlest of inclines. I think I'll be able to absolutely smash that time at the end of the month. I can't wait to try!

I was worried about the bike holding my weight but so far it's been absolutely perfect, even on stock wheels and I went over some pretty big rocks at Llandegla!

I really want to get a road bike. I love the MTB but honestly, I just want a road bike haha. I got the MTB because there's a big social aspect in that with a friend of mine who is into it. He's really keen on getting a road bike too so that should help. I'm a good while away from feeling confident in lycra though! What I'll do is just wear a tshirt with lycra shorts and a shorter pair of MTB shorts over those and my jacket.

My two goals at the moment are to do Llandegla blue in 70 minutes and to ride 10m without stopping.

So, just some rambling, mostly for myself. If you're going to delete it can you give me a shout first so I can save the text? I just thought it would be nice to keep this up to date then in 2 years when I'm doing 100m a day I can come back and be all "LOOK AT THAT!"

Thanks!

I really want to get a road bike.

Could I suggest a specialized AWOL?

If you are after a pure road bike then it may not be the bike for you, but it does have some advantages worthy of consideration.

1- Its a tank of a bike. Feels really strong.
2- Smooth. Steel frame - big tyres.
3- Versatile. Big guards, front and rear rack.
4-Trails. Not really MTB off road but it eats canal tow paths and forestry fire roads.
5- Drops. The bars quite high and the drops are easily accessible. I think I use the drops on this more than any other bike.
6- Cool, in an "Im not trying too hard to be cool" way. Well, I think so.

There are downsides...

Heavy (Payback for the strength).

Hubs - My rear was going after 500 miles. I got a local shop to put a Deore hub and better spokes on the original rim. Cost about £80ish. Im sure I could have got it replaced by spesh, but didn't have to wait for a warranty replacement - there was riding to be done!

All in all, its a great bike. Don't get me wrong - if im doing a sportive I will get the Roubiax* out and put the Zipps on, but for every day riding the AWOL is my go to bike. I have the one with the guards ad racks and for the extra they are well worth it. Its not a big seller so you should be able to get a decent chunk of a previous years bike if you can find one. mine was already marked down by £200 and a bit of a haggle and another 100 came off - and that was at a spesh store.

*after the AWOL the Roubaix feels REALLY light!

EDIT: Another plus is that with a bike like the AWOL you can get away with wearing loose shorts over your lycra with a baggier top if you don't want to go the full lycra look...

Good luck, I was there a few years ago. Although I quit smoking in the 80s. I'd quit football and running, and with long hours and stress at work, I got up there a ways. Bikes were an enjoyable outlet for me, and a form of both fun and exercise I could get along with and commit to. Stick with it!
