I am really unsure as to whether or not to get a Forerunner 305 or Edge 305. I am keen to get back into running and I definately think the Forerunner (esp virtual partner) would help for that. However, I commute 30 miles 4 days a week on beautiful but hilly roads and I think that a programmable computer will help me make the most of the commuting. I use a HR monitor now but it is very basic.

I am particularly interested in using beep alerts when I am slowing going too fast etc and would like to do some intervals.

I normally have quite alot of wind on my route- will I be able to hear the beep alerts when on the bike?

I see that the Edge screen is bigger....is the Forerunner screen big enough to read when hammering along on the bike.
I wont need to read speed just mainly whether HR was dropping above or below programmed. I would also like to see Virtual Partner, but I imagine seeing two dots on the screen is hard.

Finally, I would really like to know if the backlight can be kept on as it can be with the Edge.

Many thanks

Ed

Hi. I am a runner turned cyclist & I use my 305 all the time. It is easy to read in daylight. I set it to a mile autolap & it bleeps every mile so you can look at your time/mile if you are so inclined.Yes you do hear the beeps, enough to annoy clubmates on the club ride. I tend to use mine for post ride analysis on the bike as i think you should focus on other things when cycling. Don't know much about the Edge Bought a cadence sensor to use on the turbo which is excellent.

I have a forerunner, my friend the edge and I prefer mine as I can use it for running as well as biking. The screen is slightly smaller, but big enough!

I have a Forerunner 305. I use it for running and cycling. You can choose 3 screens worth of data (4 fields per screen) for each activity. These include everything you could possibly want - speed, pace per km or mile, average pace, average speed, max speed, altitude, time, HR, etc etc. Mine beeps every km when running, but not when cycling. I have the removable velcro strap and bike kit.

The backlight comes on on mine for 15 secs when you jab the power button. You can increase this time up to a max of two mins, or leave permanently on. This does use more power

If you get one, download Sport Tracks. Massively better than the software provided for viewing where you have been
