right so I have my new shoes(Mavic Peloton ) and new pedals(Keo Easy). I fitted them last night. Basically I just lined the little line on the cleat up with the zero mark on the shoes. I have only done a short ride this morning ( 4 miles) Seemed ok. How far would I have to ride before I found out it was not right( eg get pain).

Also is it normal to have to raise the the seat a little after moving from flats to clipless? ( How far of straight should my leg be a the bottom of the stroke)

Finally, there is a litttle movement from side to side, is this "float"

Sorry for the noob questions

The movement from side to side is the float.

It's pretty standard that you have to raise your seat, this is due to a curve in your shoe that means your pedal geomeatry has changed.

I try to get my leg as straight as possible when my foot is at the bottom of it's rotation. But when commuting i tend to lower it just a few mm for better commfort.

I would say that after a solid 4 mile ride you would notice that it is hurting.. i suggest making small adjustments over the next week or so and see which feels best.

My cleats are as far forward as possible this gives me the best comfort and best performace from my specific shoe. depending on your shoe shape this can vary.

As Gaz says -it's down to what feels best.

You may not get any pain whatsoever - leg ,knee and ankle pain is often an individual problem.

Personally I have found that for pressing down on the pedal I like the cleat forward on the shoe, but for pulling up I get more leverage if it is placed further back nearer to the arch of the foot. So I have played around and found a suitable compromise position to suit me.
