I've been reading the 'lidl' post on here, and people have been buying cycling socks. As a newer member on this forum could someone please explain to me what the difference is between these and normal socks? Sorry if I seem a bit thick!!

I got myself some karrimor dry socks. They seem perfect for cycling but still get wet when it rains ofc
These are all purpose sports socks that let your feet breath more, have a hard wearing bottom and also stay dry from sweat.

I just use trainer socks. You can get 5 pairs for about 3 quid in asda and they're essentially the same thing, minus the padding and your feet get a bit sweaty.

I would say the main difference is they are thinner which are more appropriate when wearing neat fitting road shoes; all other shoe types I would say normal sports socks do the job IMO

I don't think summer sock are *as* important, but I definitely suggest getting good socks for winter.
I must add that I used to use normal trainer socks, but kept suffering from athletes foot (it may not be linked, but it certainly seemed that way), so I moved to proper cycle socks that minimise sweat and heat retention.
Winter socks... I swear by Woolie-Boolie socks for warmth.

For reasons I don't really know, 9/10 I pick out the white socks if going for a run but back black if cycling.

I got a pair of Assos cycling socks bought for me and I now prefer using them to normal trainer or running socks.

I don't know if it's just coincidence, but the Assos' have a rolled cuff at the top, which sits perfectly at the top of my cycling shoe and forms an effective seal against the grit and gravel thrown up from the cycle paths and prevents this going into my shoe.

If the Assos' are in the wash and I wear normal socks, I invariably end up with a stone ending up in my shoe, but that's probably as much due to where I ride.
