Thats nothing. I was in Halfords last week to find all the staff sat up a corner assembling a pile of bikes. One lad was trying to hammer the left pedal onto the bike he was building

Some poor kids going to buy that!

Shame assembly don't seem to reflect the quality of (some) of the bikes. The ships bike is a Subway and actually ok. Could be improved dramatically with a decent seatpost instead of the suspension thing that makes the seat feel loose and about to fall off but otherwise comparable to my own Giant Escape for the ride.
Just hope no newcomers get put off cycling by buying a poorly assembled bike there.

I was asked this afternoon to look at the bike my friend had bought (who I gave advice beforehand about LBS etc), and what had they bought - an Apollo front suspension thing for their child. I didn't know what to say! Looked to have been built correctly I did check the handlebars etc for obvious faults.

A couple of years back, when I decided to get back into cycling [a 20 year gap!] I foolishly and naively bought a cheap Apollo MTB from them, can't say I was overly satisfied with the service or the bike [wrecked it in 6 months!]. What amused me was the safety 'tick list' which I saw the sales assistant quickly fill in as he handed me the bike !

Anyway - not been back since.

Buying wisely from Halfords can get you a decent bike. The Carrera range are great value for money - so much so that the local oiks have nicked three from our garage.

I've had two Carrera Krakens and my son is on his second Gryphon. I only migrated to a Trek MTB because I didn't like the redesign of the Kraken.

I've assembled three out of the four bikes and I had no problems with the one that was assembled by Halfords.

There are variations in the levels of competence of the bike staff - some i suspect are filling in from the car division judging by their indifference to all things cycling related but to be fair I've been happy with the staff in the two Leeds stores that I have used.

I agree. There are some really great bike bargains to be had from Halfords if you know what you are looking for.

When we purchased two subway 1's for our twin girls last year I asked the hellfrauds Monkey to take the crappy 'suspension' seat posts off and replace them with standard ones, which was done, they were actually set up properly, the mechanics vary from shop to shop, good ones don't seem to stay for long.
