Came across this poor unfortunate reptile whilst out for a ride a few weeks back.
It was found approximately here.

I think it is a grass sake. It is a little hard to say as its head was rather squashed. It was about 18-24 inches long I'd say. It had no doubt been run over by something or other. Shame, as these are getting very rare these days. If it is a grass snake, it is strange to see them this far from water as they tend to prefer watering habitats.

Yup, definately a grass snake Gixxer....
Getting rare ?..i don't think so, i think we're possibly just not in their environment that much.
I saw one like that earlier this year, but proper flat he was  . He was maybe 3 miles from the nearest river or (known) water source.
Seen them, albeit occasionally round our way over the years, but there's lots of lakes, the river, brickpits, scrubland..all perfect environment for them. They'll be there in numbers, but right time at the right place is the only way i think you'll normally see them.

I passed a road kill snake in Dorset today, an adder. I dont know if the warm weather had encouraged the stupid sod to slither into the centre of the road..beautiful day.

I had to ride over an adder curled up on a cycle path the other day while out on the Windcheetah. It's quite nerve-racking as I couldn't tell whether it was alive and sunning itself or dead in the middle of the path and a Windcheetah seat is very low...

I gave it the benefit of the doubt and managed to miss it with all three wheels

Snakes are really quite beautiful creatures and are probably rarely seen because they are pretty timid. I had a lovely grass snake living on the allotment last year - he used to bask under some corrugated iron. I dug a small pond for him in the hope of attracting frogs to keep him happy.

On Sunday I nearly cycled over a large grass snake on the cycle path near Castle Rising in Norfolk. At first glance I thought it was an old inner tube, until it slid off into the verge!
