Would you be able to get away with tying it up in a blanket or some such, and bunging it in the washing machine?

How about chucking it in the sink with some soapy water and just giving it a wash with a soft sponge?

(you can do the same with your bike helmet)

Has it got removable pads inside? remove and wash.

I clean the straps by allowing them to soak in a bowl of a solution of washing powder overnight, then rinse them afterwards. You could add a bit of milton to the water perhaps.

Replace the helmet pads - husband has just done this. LBS should be able to order them in for you.
If the originals have been there a long time they've probably got permastink and are past it. New pads solves the problem!

Be careful spraying stuff into a helmet, you could react with the polystyrene and reduce its protective qualities.

I say remove the felt pads and throw them away. Don't put replacement ones in.
Take the helmet into the shower with you when you have a shower. Hang it out on the washing line to dry out.
