Smart Meters - how to access and use the data?

We have what appears to be a working smart meter? The energy company for gas and electricity) seems happy to get the usage direct from the meter so it must be working ok. However we are not on a tariff that has cheap electricity on certain times on certain days so we are perhaps not really using it. My wife really just uses it as a kitchen clock!!

This to me means it is virtually useless to me direct other than the distance meter reading. However as a data fiend, I like to mess around with spreadsheet and numbers for myself, I wonder if it is possible to get data directly off it like our energy provider does? I would like to setup a tracker spreadsheet so I can see where reductions in use could have the most impact on saving money and energy.

This is just an idea but is it possible to get data out like ther energy company does?

It should have battery back up so you can take it off the mains and set it to show current usage. Walk around the house and turn things on and off so you can see how much they use as you go. You can then identify any old power hungry bulbs and things using up your electric. I found a couple of new lamps my wife had smuggled into the house were using old thirsty bulbs !
